case 2: developing a comprehensive career program for financial skills

aim:

To create a comprehensive program for building fee earners’ financial skills throughout their careers.


task:

  • Agreeing objectives and process with HR director.
  • Working with Learning and Development department to develop individual courses.
  • Course design.
  • Creation of e-learning materials to support all levels of fee earner development, including written materials,videos and financial modelling tools.

the story:

This top ten practice decided to make a considerable investment in the financial and commercial skills of its fee earners both through internally provided training, but also through an externally provided, tailored Masters program.


The internal training made extensive use of financial models and case studies to increase the financial skills and understanding of solicitors in the firm’s finances, profitable job management, managing the financial relationship with the client and understanding the client’s business. This is supported by a comprehensive suite of on-line training resources including financial modelling tools.


Courses are highly integrated with the firm’s financial systems, and use live reports as part of the course design.
